CIVE 224 — Sustainability in Civil Engineering Practice

Exploration of the social, environmental, and economic impacts of technologies through case studies from the past, present, and future, with an emphasis on civil engineering practice. A systems approach to engineering, considering broader constraints, objectives, risks, and impacts. Professional obligations and responsibilities. Decision-making considering tradeoffs, competing goals, ethical issues and ambiguity. Use and abuse of sustainability metrics. Collaborative and inclusive approaches to problem formulation, problem solving, design and implementation. Strategies for minimizing or mitigating unintended negative consequences of technologies. Sustainability frameworks such as circular economy, industrial ecology, and technological stewardship.
