Conceptualizing cities and time in view of thinking about urban futures. Cities as complex systems. Regulating and constraining the future. Politics and power. Impact of the future on current decision-making. Past future thinking (essentially 19th and 20th century 'western' futures). Current future thinking. Incorporating future thinking into planning practice. Visioning, scenario building and strategic planning. Roles, uses and limits of prediction; modelling; trends; foresight; scenarios; forecasting and backcasting.
